Juan Lucas started out his agricultural career renting about 1/4 hectare of land to grow vegetables and basic grains, and with the income he purchased one cow. The government gave him land for free and at that point he was able to grow vegetables and raise cow on his own land. Over the years he kept using income to purchase more land and plant coffee, dividing up his farm by gifting pieces to his four kids, who are also coffee farmers.
